Image File Formats

JPG is one of the most common image formats, widely used for photos and web images. It uses lossy compression, meaning some image quality is sacrificed to reduce file size, which works well for images like photographs where smaller files are important.

PNG is a lossless format, meaning it keeps all the image details intact. It’s perfect for images that need transparency (like logos) or for any images that require sharp details, like icons or graphics.

GIF is great for animations and simple graphics. It supports only 256 colors, so it’s not the best for detailed images but works well for things like small animations and web graphics with fewer colors.

BMP is an older image format, and it’s uncompressed, meaning the files are large. It’s not commonly used today, but it was once standard on Windows systems for basic images.

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native format, keeping all your layers, masks, and effects intact. It’s perfect for working on complex designs or photos where you want to make changes later without losing quality.

TIFF is a high-quality format often used by photographers and in print, as it supports lossless compression and can handle multiple layers or pages. It’s ideal for projects where image quality is critical and you need to preserve details.

HEIC is a newer format used mostly on Apple devices. It offers high-efficiency compression, meaning it keeps high image quality while reducing file size, making it great for photos without taking up too much storage.

PSB is similar to PSD but is made for very large files. If you’re working on huge, high-resolution images (like large digital art or prints), PSB can handle sizes that regular PSD files can’t.

Camera Raw is a file format that captures unprocessed image data straight from your camera’s sensor. It gives photographers maximum control over editing (like exposure and white balance), but it requires special software like Adobe Lightroom to process and convert it into a usable image.

Adobe Photoshop (PSD) is the industry-standard tool for professional photo editing and design. It offers powerful features like layers, masks, and advanced tools for precise image manipulation, making it perfect for high-level photo editing, graphic design, and digital painting.

Photopea is a free, browser-based editor that works similarly to Photoshop and can even open PSD files. It’s a great option when you need to make quick edits or don’t have access to Photoshop, offering a lot of functionality without any cost.

GIMP is a free, open-source alternative to Photoshop with plenty of features, including layers and support for various plugins. It’s perfect for photo manipulation and graphic design, especially if you're looking for a powerful tool without spending money.

Procreate is a popular apple app loved by digital artists. It’s perfect for drawing, sketching, and painting on the iPad, which offers a wide range of brushes and real-time drawing feedback. It’s an  creative tool for anyone into digital art and illustration.

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s format, used for vector graphics like logos and illustrations. It keeps everything editable and scalable without losing quality.

PDF is a versatile format that can contain both text and images, making it perfect for sharing documents or designs that need to look the same on any device.

SVG is a vector format perfect for web graphics and logos, as it scales without losing quality and is lightweight.

INDD is Adobe InDesign’s format, used for creating print layouts like magazines, brochures, and books, keeping all text and design elements intact.

EPS is a vector-based format, commonly used for high-quality print graphics. It’s great for logos and illustrations that need to be resized.

AIT is a template format in Illustrator, used for creating reusable design layouts for multiple projects.

Adobe Illustrator (AI): AI files are used for creating designs like logos and illustrations that can be resized without losing quality.

Adobe InDesign (INDD): INDD files are for making multi-page documents like books or magazines, organizing text and images.

Adobe Photoshop (PSD): PSD files are used for editing photos and artwork, saving all layers and effects for future edits.

CorelDraw (CDR): CDR files are for creating vector designs (like logos) that can be resized without getting blurry.

Adobe Animate (FLA): FLA files are used for making animations and interactive media, saving all the animation details.

INDD: INDD files are used in Adobe InDesign for making things like magazines and books. They save the layout, text, and images.

IDML: IDML files are like a "version" of INDD files that can be opened in older or different versions of InDesign.
